Is there a reason the ‘Read more’ tag doesn’t work in product posts in the WP Store theme? I would like to get this working on product descriptions and on category pages.

Yes, the buttons for the ‘Add to Basket’ etc work, but if insert a ‘read more’ tag into a product’s post text, that does not appear in the product description.

the site is at http://www.adcdrums.co.uk and I’ve tried out the ‘read more’ tag on the following products: https://adcdrums.co.uk/products/vintage-ludwig-1960s-pre-serial-red-sparkle-shell-pack/ and https://adcdrums.co.uk/products/evans-hd-dry-14-snare-drum-head/

The ‘read more’ I believe is essential for UI these days, especially on mobile devices where customers often don’t want to initially be presented with a scroll of text. It’s just too messy on a small screen. I’m not sure why Woocommerce haven’t though of this. They have 2 tabs rendering in the product view, one for the description and one displaying any attributes of the product. Not really much use on a small screen and displaying attributes which have a primary use for product filtering is simply not necessary in the UI of the customer.

WordPress has the_content() or the_excerpt() to help us out with not overloading the viewer with a ton of text so I’d like to get it working in this theme.

      Hi there,

      Thank you for writing back.

The requirements that you are mentioning are controlled by the Woocommerce plugin and the product pages are customized by those plugins as well. That is why we have not modified product pages.

Please do contact us if you have any questions.

      Regards!

That explains it then! I will contact Woocommerce support then to try and find a solution. Thanks for explaining.

I contacted Woocommerce support and they said the ‘Read More’ function in Woocommerce only works for actual BLOG pages rather than single product pages. However, I was pointed to a workaround which I am prepared to try in my child theme on test installation. The article can be found here. Can you see any reason why this would not work with your theme?

      Hi there,

      Thank you for writing back.

To change the woocommerce add to cart button to read more it requires editing some PHP codes in your plugin file. If you are able to handle the PHP codes please do let us know we will guide you.

      Regards!

It’s not the ‘Add to cart’ button I want to change on the product archive pages, it’s the text on the actual product pages below the ‘Add to cart’ button. That is the text that needs the ‘Read more…’ link as found in normal WordPress posts. It’s simply too much text to display on a mobile device. If this cannot be done without changing code in a plugin then it’s not something that should be done as best practice. Child theme files are the only place I would consider changing code.

Maybe this is something Woocommerce should think about implementing on product pages instead of including the useless attributes tab which most people hide via a bit of code in the functions.php file. Attributes are fantastic for filtering, but have no place in a modern UI! So what we have then, is something for the Woocommerce changelog which I will ask about.
